About

DIYNGO stands for “Do It Yourself Non Governmental Organisation”. We are an NGO (currently a voluntary organisation) who create an awareness of the usefulness of renewable technologies, e.g. wind and solar power. Specifically, we are interested in using this renewable energy to power a range of computing devices, from Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs or ‘smartphones’) to Personal Computers (notably so-called ‘netbooks’). To this end we currently have two renewable energy ‘products’ which are in the final stages of prototyping: SOL-1 and SWIM-1. Additionally, we have written software to help people make decisions about the most appropriate renewable energy/ICT solution.

However, we firmly believe that the kinds of issues we are trying to address will not be ‘solved’ by technical solutions alone. Hence, we are constantly developing our philosophies regarding the kind of community intervention we seek.

To date we have been involved in the Haiti earthquake relief effort, through the provision of equipment, and have an ongoing interest in rural Kenya where we are networking, co-constructing our ideas and supplying some basic equipment to help acheive our mission aims.

We do not work alone. Untold people have helped us to date including HYMini, Tech Centre Labs, Dr. David Harper (University of Leicester) plus various services including GoDaddy, the Royal Mail, Maplin, Webjam, Ning, Google, the WordPress community and finally anonymous well-wishers, friends and family!

We are a small community but you are welcome to join by registering on our homepage. We can also be contacted at info AT diyngo DOT org.
